The smart cities of the future will optimise their operations and services using various technologies including cyber-physical systems, hyperactive data-rich models, and machine learning. However, the application of innovative technologies in smart cities will create fragile cyber-physical-natural ecosystems that are exposed to sophisticated and well-organised cybercrime. Luckily, leveraging data from sensors coupled with machine learning techniques could help develop protective countermeasures to achieve cyber resilience. In cases where a crisis is inevitable, infrastructure optimisation and ML-based integrity diagnostics will be required to deliver self-healing capabilities. This talk will investigate the current state-of-the-art approaches and discuss how we can strategically develop a modern cyber defence posture.
